Water Level Monitoring & Early Warning Sytem
Island Communications products and services offer a simple technical overview of products and services and this page will be updated in tandem with changes or enhancements as they become available:
Island Environment Services
The Island Environment portfolio consists of Water Level Monitoring and Early Warning System for effective Flood Risk Management.
Enhancements are currently being introduced to provide more detailed graphs to show water levels and this includes coloured bandings to clearly show High Water and Pre-Flood Levels. Other enhancements include detail of Battery condition and local Cellular Service signal strength which can help in areas of fluctuating coverage.

The above graph plots the water level over a 24 hour period and the coloured bands represent (pink) High water band (red) Pre-Flood level. As can be seen the spike at around 03:30 shows the influence of a high tide which returns to a lesser degree almost 13 hours later.
The Alert system can integrate with nominated Mobile Numbers or where available with BT Land lines where a Text Alert may be delivered as an electronic Text to Voice translation. A future enhancement will deliver a pre-agreed announcement direct to a nominated Voice Line.
As well as plotting water levels on a simple graphical representation as above, Island provide a download facility allowing extraction of collected Data in .csv format direct to an excell spreadsheet. This allows more detailed analysis of captured level data which may be of value to Hydrologists.

Example of data extracted showing depth Station battery status and network signal strength
Island standard approach to water level monitoring is done through Hydrostatic sensor equipment from one of the top UK manufacturers. We report the accurate readings through GPRS modules from Siemens and Islands special circuitry design.
The reported data is normally collected hourly at default level although this may be specified at different periods. When specific levels are reached (High water & Pre-Flood) the reporting period changes to a default of 15 minutes providing more detailed graphical presentation on water level activity.
The Island Monitoring system can be effective in small brooks and burns with Culverts and screens all the way up to larger water courses, rivers, canals, lakes and coastal stretches to monitor sea levels above normal tidal predictions.
As further verification of water level activity, Island Communications are able to supply digital image cameras to capture images of the water course. This is particularly useful for Culvert screens to show the extent of blockage which can prove invaluable to visiting clearance teams.
Culvert Surveillance
Cameras may be internally (Covert) or external mount
The Island Water Level Monitoring and Early Warning system is used extensively by Councils, Parish Councils and by private individuals. We work in co-operation with the Environment Agencies who use data from some of our stations as part of a wider Flood Risk Management scheme.
Each Monitoring and early warning system is a bespoke design to meet local site requirements and are priced accordingly. Please contact Island Communications specialists for assistance or quotation.
